‘twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the things you did. so throw off the bowlines. sail away from the safe harbor. catch the trade winds in your sails. explore. dream. discover. -mark twain

my fairytale

I was blonde and my two sisters were brunette, but I never minded they were my best friends. We grew up in a pretty brick house with a pretty backyard and a real nice dog. We had a sand box and a swing set and our dog’s name was Girl. My room was the best one, it had two giant windows and I remember pulling my covers over my head in the mornings when my mom would come in and sing Rise and Shine as she opened the blinds. We had a list or morning chores and we started on the runner in the hallway and raced to see who could finish first- get dressed, comb your hair, brush your teeth, eat breakfast, race race race. My dad used to swoop us up in his arms and zoom us through the house like a rocket ship and plop us on our beds before he’d tell us the story about the big bad wolf. We’d sit there in his t-shirts that drowned our tiny bodies and reached past our knees. We would giggle as he’d knock on our foreheads and blow in our faces when the pigs were trying to get away. He was always my coach and everyone wanted him as their own, especially when he’d talk real fast for my friends; that always made him the coolest. If you flip through our photo albums you can feel the happy emitting from the glossy prints: Father’s Day breakfasts in our pajamas and ratty hair, Easter Egg hunts and magical Christmas’. He took us for rides through the desert in the dune buggy and fishing at the cabin. He even let us free the fish when he might have wanted to save it for dinner.... that’s what happens when you’re prince charming to three little girls, i’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Dad even snuck water into our rooms at night so our tummies could be full as we dozed off into our sweet dreams. Looking back I don’t even think it was the water we wanted, mom always let us guzzle as much as we wanted before we hopped in bed. We would tip our little heads under the faucet until we were full and then she’d lay us on the floor and shake our tummies until we could hear it splashing inside our bellies. We would giggle and giggle and giggle. Then off to bed to pick a story from our big library of books. Going on a Bear Hunt was my favorite, probably because she’d sing the chorus... splish splash through the water, swish swash through the forest... she was a good story teller and she sang to us too. Down By the Bay... I remember giggling when we came up with new rhymes for the end. She could always erase the mistakes without ripping the paper and packed us lunches and walked us to the bus stop in the mornings, it was perfect.
Time flies, especially when you move to New York City and all your wildest dreams have suddenly become true. I was busy and I woke up in bed giddy every morning simply in disbelief that it was all real. Someone once told me I was running away from reality but I never felt that way- I was just running into my dreams and making them my own reality. Mom and Dad told us our whole lives we could be anything we ever wanted and I have just been just doing it. I love them, more than I can ever seem to express and I will forever be grateful. forever. I miss it sometimes, our fairytale. But it doesn't make me any less grateful for a Mom and Dad who made my life all it was and continue loving me more than any child could ever wish for.
