i don't like sweet potatoes but...

i  love thanksgiving!
i really can't stand it when people skip over it in a hurry to rush right in to christmas because it's my #1 holiday!
this year was a special one spent in the city with some of my besties...
H+J+i put on our martha faces and made it real fancy.

props to J who handmade feather headbands to wrap around her gold flatware and then worn on our indian heads while we ate. so pretty! we sprinkled acorns and berries sprinkled on the runner for a little extra wow and everyone got their own assigned seat and personalized indian name.
oh and we made these little guys. which A got dared to eat in one bite; and he did. shout out to him, it was really a hilarious and stomach churning feat!

H was in charge of the turkey and gravy and she even homemade bread for the stuffing. it was in-credible. we had cranberry crunch and green bean casserole and rolls and corn and salad and mashed potatoes (fav.) and on and on and into nap time and games and then pumpkin pie and lemon meringue. i had a really mature food baby for the rest of the night... and well into  the following day. it was so worth it.i am still convinced i am the most blessed girl alive and that makes me grateful for so much. if i started it would just never end. so i guess you'll just have to believe me!

my obsessions. as of late.

i nominate heytell the best invention of 2010. especially when it gets dangerous. like when you heytell your friend "i hope you're making out with him!" and she plays it while she's sitting right next to "him." so good.

my job has always been awesome. for a little it felt like such a job but lately, i am in love. in love with it.

my friends are the best the best the best. life just would not be the same without girlfriends. padded bra dates. couch farting. inappropriate women commercials. boy talk. eyelashes. birth. boob jobs. nose jobs. annie. and lots and lots and lots of gut laughter. i am pretty sure these are the types friends you have forever.

i accidentally bumped into nola+paul on skype- (in poland) made my whole sunday.

the ensign conference edition. it's my half-yearly favorite thing.

my roommate went home for a week, a few weeks ago, and decided to stay... living solo in my apartment has been, surprisingly awesome.

shopping online and filling my cart up with everything i wish i could have just to see the total is an obsession that will never get old. one day i am convinced i'll be rich enough to click CHECKOUT.

laughing so hard i almost pee. that's been happening a lot the past few days.

i have never been a chocolate girl. but lately, it's taken over my guilty pleasure list and i've consumed the most ridiculous amount of it lately, it's really quite a feat.

rihanna + gorillaz couldn't be more un-alike in the music world and are also on the two top played CDs on my iphone this past week. oh nah nah...

they have been re-modeling the apartment RIGHT next to mine, so i wake up to them banging on my wall. every morning the past few weeks. don't worry in retaliation i  have been BLASTing taylor swift as loud as i can back. this. is. war.

too much candy+keeping up mark

oh october... scrollll dowwwwn...
halloween this year was the best year yet. i was pocahontas and was in costume ALL day. we dressed up @work on saturday and with everyone's creative brains exploding all over the salon it made for so much chaos and so much fun. then the hummus place with friends for dinner and off to party! the stake dance will never be cool. the party outside in the courtyard was fun until the neighbors starting pouring water on us and the cops showed up. we made our way up to the after party and danced in the dark until it got late late late and then put on a scary movie

pumpkins+confused fuscia

the week before a group of us went to THE BLAZE in a little town upstate. they all get together and carve hundreds and hundreds of pumpkins and make crazy creatures out of them. it's quite the spectacle. pictures really do not do it justice but here's one anyways.

late night girl talk+cubic zirconia

teryn + damien came to visit before that and we partied in the city and drove to sleepy hallow to be spooked. it was fun waltzing through the graveyard after hours pretending to be scared until the security guards starting driving by and we dove behind tombstones to hide. that part was actually scary.
damien also let me dump as many pixie sticks possible into his mouth and he swalled em' all. i didn't even have to ask twice. and it was loads of fun. it's amazing how much saliva your body will produce when put in such a predicament! (the video is even better) oh and i got my ears pierced! THAT was exciting! and i was so nervous my palms did sweat and the lady did think i was a wuss. and that is something i don't have a picture of but i'm sure you'll see in many other for the rest of my life!

a one way ticket+the perfect flavor feeling

have you ever gone to get an ice cream cone and as your standing there deciding from the so many flavors your brain almost explodes! as you try to imagine how each one is going to taste in your mouth? will mint chocolate+oreo be the best choice or should you just stick with the veryberrystrawberry because thats a classic and that's always been your favorite? so, you finally decide and still have a little anxiety because even after all that time you were kinda still a little more rushed than you'd like to have been and as he's scooping it all you can do is hope hope hope you made the right choice... and then, you get it and you take your first taste and realize you chose the perfect flavor?
it's the best feeling ever.
tonight i feel like i just swallowed a gallon of the perfect flavor, but this is no sugar rush...
and i am so excited. just like the day i wore yellow goggles+ rode my dads shoulder @the beach. oooo adventure!

a mention+making it big in the city

if you flip open to somewhere in the middle of this months october InSTYLE you'll find a list of the top salons in the states. my salon is the one listed under manhattan's. and because i am one of the colorists at a salon that got recognized as the best in a national magazine, it makes me feel kind of (really) happy inside. hoo-rah for living a dream!

eye goo+no regrets

"Maybe mistakes are what make our fate...without them what would shape our lives? Maybe if we had never veered off course we wouldn't fall in love, have babies, or be who we are. After all, things change, so do cities, people come into your life and they go. But it's comforting to know that the ones you love are always in your heart...and if you're very lucky, a plane ride away." -CB

i had an eye infection last week. it was a little goopy and red and not annoying at all (but it really was annoying and thats my annoyed face photographed) the doctor said i would pass the infection if i went to work so i got sent home and had to stay the next one too. so i did what any person would do, i ignored my lengthy to-do list and just relaxed. and i  missed being in vegas. i wished they would've diagnosed me one day earlier before i boarded that red-eye flight back so i could be there again,  sitting on the tennis court with lights strung up high above us. lighting up the sky just enough so we  could sit in a circle and laugh at funny stories of the past or what the unknown our futures may bring. mostly just enjoying being there. together. and i wondered if it was all a mistake. me moving to new york city and chasing all my wild dreams. because i missed my dear family right then. and then that got my thoughts really reeling... what if it was a mistake? and if it was then what else was a mistake too?

bumble+bumble. riverside drive. all the red eye flights. being blond. that pricey pair of heels. recovery. moving more than a neighbor away.  paddling out to the middle of the lake under the stars. was it too soon? handwritten poetry and a second chance. omelets and hummus. space. maybe it'd be a mistake to leave my career one day to start a family. or stay inside on a rainy day and watch movies instead of worrying about being responsible and getting things done. i could wonder my life away and question it all...

but that just seems silly. and i just can not help but think that none of it has been a mistake anyway. because, i would not take any of it back. and is that what mistake means? you wish you had a giant eraser to scrub it out of your life with? i guess you can call moments like that mistakes, it's all in how you look at it maybe?  i think what i have decided is that if i have made any mistake in my life, it has been living. to the very fullest. blindly  just jumping into it with faith and a sprinkle of adrenaline; not knowing where i will land.  all of those mistakes, they have made me who i am. and i do not have any regrets.

it does not mean that i have always landed on a pile of clouds and sunshine... sometimes when you jump into the unknown, you find yourself in some really painful flower bushes. the ones with long stems and lots of thorns that florists charge a lot for. and the ones that stick in your side and make it hard to breathe. but i have learned that if you stay there for too long feeling sorry for yourself they just start to cut you even more. so you just tilt your head up to where the flower blooms up top and you sit on that for a while and appreciate that big leap and how good it felt along the way. and all the really great things you learned. soon enough, that is all that is left to see of that rose bush- all the pretty petals and the sweet scent it gives off. and that is what pushes you along to your next adventure... this time you're even stronger than before, and you can leap a little further into bigger dreams and better adventures or just one where you better belong.

because life is too short to be one of those people that let fear paralyze them into a stalemate. into a life where they are left wishing they would have, could have,  and realizing they missed out once it's too far gone. tip toeing along may eventually lead you to something happy, but why settle for that when you can take a chance at something incredible?

at the end of the day or through all my mistakes, and all this rambling- i know one thing is certain:
it's comforting to know that the ones i love are always in my heart... and because i am very lucky, a plane ride away.

VW + a sold out show

we went to VAMPIRE WEEKEND yesterday.
it was a real real really good time.
i like it when the bass i so loud it echoes in your chest.
i like it when you dance dance dance around.
i like it, singing along with the crowd.
 + bouncing up and down.
i really just think going to live shows will always be a major like/love of mine.
and i like that too.

a red bicycle+growing up

i moved. and the cable company is booked out four weeks in advance... who knew?! cable is so in right now. and that's why i have not blogged.

my couch is so in right now... in my apartment. i ordered the most precious couch i'd ever laid eyes on and after a couple attempts to deliver it without me being there, they finally carried it up two flights of stairs to my cozy apartment annnnd (drumroll) it wouldn't fit through the door.
i have been praying a lot lately. i love praying, i always have. but i have been praying alot alot (maybe even triple alot) lately and when i came home and the couch was sitting outside my door i walked right past it and kneeled on my floor and gave quite possibly the silliest prayer of my life:

"dear God, please make this couch fit. i know that this is silly. i know that this does not matter and that i can find a new couch, but it has been a crummy week and i really just want a place to sit. a cute place to sit. when things got crummy for Job he still had faith. i would still have faith. i promise. and i still would really love for a miracle to happen. i would really like for this couch to fit through my front door.  and God, i love you. and i know that i am blessed and even though it has been a crummy week, it's still not as crummy as Job's- it just feels like it. thank you, Aubrey"
then my friend came over and he unscrewed that door and we twisted the couch and, it fit. and i closed my eyes and said "thank you."

i have so many things to be thankful for. especially lately. it's funny, sometimes life gets so busy and crazy and it all kind of dumps on you and you think for a quick minute that life sucks. and then you cry some and pray some and you wake up the very next day and you realize how extremely blessed you are.

i realized today how much more this life is than the things i sometimes get caught up and lost in. we got a new bishopric and he bore his testimony. he won us over with his humor and humility as he told us his thoughts of accepting his call and then he mentioned his wife. he told us was not hard to spot if we wanted to find her, she was simply the most beautiful one in the whole room. and then he wiped tears from his eyes as he looked over at her. he adored her. he went on and bore a powerful testimony and then afterwards the stake president got up and made sure we knew the sacrifice this man was making by taking this calling. he works for a major bank and travels the world as a top executive in their company and has been busy with the rise and fall of the economy. he said the night our new bishop received his call he had just flown in from a long business trip in brazil and was tired. and then he told us that the only time through in the conversation they had that evening where the new bishop showed any sign of disappointment was when the stake president mentioned that he would not be releasing his wife as the stake relief society president of our manhattan stake. when he went on to tell us how this new bishop expressed his concern of missing his wife and being able to spend time with her, he made it known to us that this was a sacrifice, and i was grateful. and i knew life did not suck.

it doesn't and it never will. it's all in how you accept your trials, hopefully with grace. and i look forward to a life full of experiences and trials and opportunities. especially to sacrifice and with someone by my side that adores me. i love love.

i know that sometime i seem to be such a hater. but i am not. my parents divorce is yuck and sad and it's okay, i still know i can find a love that will last forever. and it will be the very sweetest thing too. (even better than a couch fitting through a small new york city apartment door.)

sometimes... life flips us upside down and shakes us a lot and really knocks you on the head so we will just pay attention! my goodness i thought to myself the other day, aubrey you can be so stubborn! i am grateful for the times when we lose things because when we find them again we really have such a greater appreciation for them.

i am always losing my keys! serioulsy, it's ridiculous. but once it happened at not such an opportune moment and a dear friend told me 'aubrey every time you leave the house just think to yourself, do i have my keys' and i laughed and thought 'oh if it were only that simple!' but- it is, and i haven't lost my keys in what i'd like to think, is a long time. every once in a while i need to be reminded to grab them on my way out, but when i rummage through my bag at the end of a long day at work, i am always so happy and relieved to stumble upon them!

and that's what i am learning. that sometimes losing things is a good thing. even if it's just a few seconds i spend worrying digging through my bag, i am always happy to find them there. and on the days i don't lose them, when they are just right there where i put them; i have learned to appreciate them on those days too. i lost my gold bracelet once. the one that is delicate and buckles in the center. it only took me losing it once for me to appreciate it every time i wanted to wear it.

i love my life and everything it brings me. i am grateful for trials, even though they are hard; they are good and if we allow them to, we can learn and they will make us stronger and help us to grow. that's all. quite wordy for such a simple statement but it's been a while. i turned twenty two a little bit ago and it was a really good one. i have a feeling this is going to be the best year yet...

(and i over punctuate. i know that too.)

photo friend

josh is a good friend of mine and an extraordinary new york wedding photographer. he just recently updated his website so you should check it out. josh does local work here in new york or is available to do destination weddings worldwide. he's pretty amazing and talented and has been doing and loving photography long before it was the "cool" thing to do. i'm just saying. oh and did i mention that he is one of the most chill and layed back guys ever? so refreshing to be around, especially on your wedding day.

thunderstorms+birthday wishes

tonight my boyfriend and i decided we wanted a treat. so we stomped into our shoes and headed down to the corner store and were so very surprised when we opened the door and saw rain dumping out of the sky! stomp stomp back to the elevator, ding ding going up eight floors, squeeek door open, grab umbrella and then re-trace path to basement door. the rain was pouring pouring pouring and within ten steps huddled together under our portable cover we realized it was a little inadequate for the storm we were walking through! so we laughed and laughed and laughed and our feet got sopping wet and when we finally made it two blocks to the store we collapsed our cover. i turned around and to my horror realized my heart-throb of a boyfriend had been so worried about keeping me and my sunday best dry that he had sacrificed his WHOLE backside of his body to the water!  a lot more laughing, a pint of ice cream, and a thank-you-for-protecting-me kiss on the cheek later we headed back out in the storm to head home and enjoy our treat. and it was delicious. that really good kind of delicious that makes you smack your lips as you spoon it into your mouth. still, not as good as having a boyfriend who keeps you dry in a new york city thunderstorm on the way to buy a midnight snack...

it is my birthday tomorrow and all i can seem to wish for is these two girls. it has been so long and i miss them. i miss them a lot lately. and i know there are so many wonderful things to wish for, especially when one is turning twenty two. but this birthday it is a simple choice, i wish for them. these two best friends are the wonderful i chose this birthday eve.

red vines + 500 days of summer

i know there are added perks when you become a married couple and maybe even some notsuchperks  but i hope, whenever i do end up with someone and whomever i do end up with, the nights of renting a movie and going home early and then ending up just lying there talking + giggling yourselves to sleep, never end. because those nights are my favorite. i don't expect much, i am quite simple. and i realized that today, i don't have a lot of expectations. i have a lot of hopes. and hope is always a good thing. i think hope is what makes me such a dreamer.

6.28.2010

ferry rides+a waffle cone

we took the ferry to governor's island today to watch the polo match. prince harry was there and there was lots of wine and sun hats. maybe our expectations were a little high about the experience in general ... or maybe it just wasn't anywhere near as refreshing as our bike ride along the pier tonight. good company is all you need to make the experience worthwhile. it was worthwhile. it was a good day.

A: him coming home a day early from a business trip and surprising you in real life.

four years ago i graduated high school. and it is just crazy to think that means i have spent just as much time out of high school as i spent in it. i would not have ever believed anyone if they would have told me i would be where i am now in my life, just how i got here, and all that happened along the way. and i kinda like that. i kind of really like that.
...that life is just a bunch of surprises waiting to explode in your face when you least expect it.

tiptoe tiptoe JUMP

"A couple of hundred years ago, Benjamin Franklin shared with the world the secret of his success. Never leave that till tomorrow, he said, which you can do today. This is the man who discovered electricity. You think more people would listen to what he had to say. I don't know why we put things off, but if I had to guess, I'd have to say it has a lot to do with fear. Fear of failure, fear of rejection, sometimes the fear is just of making a decision, because what if you're wrong? What if you're making a mistake you can't undo? The early bird catches the worm. A stitch in time saves nine. He who hesitates is lost. We can't pretend we hadn't been told. We've all heard the proverbs, heard the philosophers, heard our grandparents warning us about wasted time, heard the damn poets urging us to seize the day. Still sometimes we have to see for ourselves. We have to make our own mistakes. We have to learn our own lessons. We have to sweep today's possibility under tomorrow's rug until we can't anymore. Until we finally understand for ourselves what Benjamin Franklin really meant. That knowing is better than wondering, that waking is better than sleeping, and even the biggest failure, even the worst, beat the hell out of never trying." -MG

inside my journal

5.15.2010

today was an ordinary day. and then i thought through my day and concluded; my ordinary days are quite extraordinary.
i also came to the conclusion that
a walk home and kiss on the forehead is a pretty perfect way to end a day. even if the walk home is <10 steps.

one more conclusion, my two most favorite gifts to give/receive will forever be:
            1. a mixed tape
            2. a good book

and pedicures are a favorite of mine too. not to be gifted but to pay for.
and standing on my feet for over twelve hours a day makes them a guilt free+ frequent favorite treat.

i wondered today where my dimples came from?
and noticed that when i am reading a good book i take the local train home instead of the express so i double my time to read. (always)
but when the weather is nice, i ride my bicycle.
and i really love riding my bicycle.
and i really love that the hardest part of my week was deciding between so many good things.
this week i especially am crazy in love with: that late night chat with mom. the sunshine. puffs with lotion and lemon cough drops. my candles. kit kats. purple nail polish. green apples, pictures from my childhood, my comfy red sneakers, and headbands.
i also decided this week that  i really don't like sleeping on a twin bed anymore. no matter how comfy the mattress is, i am looking forward to my upgrade. sleeping under all my fluffy covers with the AC on high and having all the room in the world to roll around, sounds real great.
okay all that bed talk made me remember how tired i am. please runny nose stop soon.
xx aubrey

5.07.2010

remember when scrat was trying to burying his acorn and it caused the crack in the ice that traveled all the way up to the tippie top of the the hill that caused the split that then became the start of the ice age? it's days like this that make me sit and close my eyes so so tight and wish as hard as i possible can that i could just go back to that first crack... if i could just go back to that first secret that was buried or that first moment you didn't chose each other to confide in. to that first small small split that caused that little space between you two that over time morphed into this earthquake, into this huge catastrophe that seems impossible to ever mend. i just wish i could go back and fix it. push you back together before it was too late. because it is days like this when the weight of it all is crushing and breaks my heart.

i went grocery shopping today and it started to rain so i hailed a cab. this is the exact conversation that happened between me and the driver. (no part has been removed or fabricated)

him: "you are very attractive"
me: (pause) "thanks"
him: "that is a good compliment"
me: "yes it is... thank you!"
a moment...
him: "are you a miss or a misses?"
me: "i am a miss"
him: "why not a misses? are you waiting for prince charming"
me: "yep. mmm hmm. prince charming!"
him: "do you think you are not ready?"
me: "not quite ready."
him: "you are an idiot because you think you are not ready, but you are."

just in time as we pull up to my door. i kindly thanked him for the advice, tipped, and walk inside (trying not to burst out laughing)

ambivalent

she slipped her pretty dress over her shoulders and stomped her feet into her peep toe heels with a bow on the front before pressing her lips against the tissue to dab a little of the pigment off. it just looked better that way. he picked her up right on time and smelled real nice when she wrapped her arm around his and he leaned in front of her to open the car door. they drove together up the winding road to dinner and dessert on park city's main street. a real good conversation and a few awfully hilarious giggles later led to a quick drive up into the mountains. it was a mansion of course and it was empty and quiet, except for the bubbling hot tub in the back. a few patches of snow were piled around the tree trunks and when she tilted her head up the endless black sky was smeared with twinkling stars. it burned a little when she stepped in but by the time it reached her elbows the warmth just felt nice. he thought it was real funny when he dunked her head under and they laughed at the story he told her about all those years ago. they would've sat there all night and chatted if her feet didn't start hurting from morphing into raisins. it was oh so cold stepping out but she rinsed off and changed into an oversized sweater and braided her hair around her head. he had a movie planned but the theatre was quite complicated. she didn't mind. she was always more drawn to simplicity and sitting in front of the fire wrapped in a huge furry blanket was better anyways. especially since she had forgotten to refresh the rest of that pigment she'd accidentally dabbed off at dinner...

and what if i told you this wasn't pulled from any imagination and he plays the guitar? you wouldn't believe me? would you?

things have been BUSY lately! larry got back from traveling with the U2 crew to africa for the louis vuitton campaign that will launch next season. i was made full time on the floor and my bestie rubi was hired on our team as a full time stylist! today i was fully booked on the floor and we launched our website!  whittemorehousesalon.com finally! yay! we also have recently been featured in harper bazaar's april edition and quoted as NY's "hidden gem" and were named in New York Mag's BEST OF 2010 best salon.

spring has finally come and the weather in the city is breath taking. we've been bicycling, egg dying in the park and walking instead of riding the train. honestly, i am so stupidly happy it's silly! more details to come later.

that's all for now. xx

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dear reader,
when i was 19 years old i moved to new york city to chase all my wildest dreams. i packed up my life and boarded the flight not knowing a single person in this giant city, other than my mom who was walking right beside me holding directions to my new apartment we both had never seen. those few days we were busy painting, buying a bed, desk, toothpaste and everything else to make up my home while navigating our way through the city's maze of underground transportation. she tried to hide her tears as she hugged me goodbye and walked out the pretty iron doors leaving me to live all the unknown. (nervous+anxious+giddy)
the salon i initially had a job lined up with did not feel good when i sat down to meet them; that was the first time i cried here. i couldn't work somewhere i did not love, but i also could not be jobless in this big city by myself. my mom was the first one i called when i landed the job @BUMBLE. (disbelief+ecstatic+grateful)
my first day starting as a color apprentice would begin the first day i got back from china. i was used to wearing all black, it had been my dress code since starting hair school and working at the sushi restaurant my two years in utah. what i wasn't used to was the three stories of head spinning creativity and beautiful hair.

i was at the very best salon to learn, one that was well known globally for their work and training program. it was there i learned that there was no limit to what you create with color and my mind exploded with all of the opportunity that was placed right at my fingertips. long days, client orders to the cafe, applying capes and base cream, mixing endless bowls of color and shampooing until my hands bled (literally) it was exhausting. i was trying to absorb all i was seeing: the formulas, the art of painting, the the magic of the gloss, all while sitting the next client, mixing for the current, grabbing a magazine for the other and shampooing the fourth. mondays were our days to practice and prove our progress. compliments were seldom, their method of "constructive criticism" wore on me. if my color was flawless, then it was something personal my manager attacked. riding my bike through central park to work in the mornings became the only refreshing part of my days that march. i was trying to keep up with all that was required and found myself having to defend my faith with all the controversy over propeight. especially since the new assitant switch had newly placed me with the most liberal black gay man ever.

my dad was visiting when i walked out the doors that night and sobbed. i didn't know if there was anymore i could give. i questioned if i really had it in me. he wrapped his arms around me and told me he loved me and he believed in me. that hug is what pushed me through the next few weeks trying to fight off all the personal attacks this man was making. i was so worn out on the corporate garbage that was taking over bumble... i just wanted to color hair. not all the days were gloomy, i loved the chats we had eating on the stoop upstairs and laughing at ridiculously crotchety clients. but this man was pulling out all the stops and his close friendship with the manager of the color floor led to my "letting go" that coming may. rubi and i walked out with tears strolling off our face that night in disbelief. everyone loved me there minus one and some of the sparse compliments i had heard were unique ones- i was special, a natural and that there was something about me people were attracted to and that would take me far. every single person i had worked side by side with on that color floor all those days supported me, complaints were made, sides were taken, but in the end that one man and the power of the manager won. i gracefully walked out after giving my hugs goodbye and cleared out my locker and walked home devastated.

i knelt down humbled that night crushed that my talent and well liked personality could not keep me afloat above the hate in the world, jealousy, and conflict with my personal beliefs. that night as i knelt to pray the feeling of peace completely overwhlemed me. i took the summer off and got a part time job @anthropologie. i got the break i needed and my spirits were so lifted. everything fell into place when i got a call from larry later that summer. he had just left bumble that spring and partnered up with bumble's head colorist of fifteen years, victoria, to open their own salon in the west village. i started my first day the week of my twenty first birthday. when i blew out those candles on that cupcake i was convinced i was the happiest girl alive. i was surrounded by the best friends i  had ever known, singing me happy birthday and dancing in pretty dresses and bowties. the whittemore house has been a dream. flattered they had called me bumbles loss and immediately snatched me up to be part of their team, i once again was consumed with my passion for hair color and this time i was appreciated and saw it more magnified than ever before. every magazine i flipped through had our work in it, every day seemed sunny, and the love that pulled me all the way across the country lived everywhere in this salon.

at the first of november i checked myself into an eating disorder clinic in reno nevada. the addiction had twisted it's way into my life and was starting to take over. despite all the happiness and good things i had going for me, i could not fight this disorder by myself. it was a secret that after having kept for a year to myself i could not keep any longer. i flew out of the city i had fallen so in love with to face the hardest trial i had experienced in my life. 24 hour a day therapy, lack of physical movement and contact with the outside world was so so trying; to say the least, and has also shaped me into more of a woman now than i had ever been before. i sat in a circle holding hands with some of the most extraordinary women i have met and was wished off into a happy life and with all their love and support. i landed back in new york city this january and finally felt like i was home again. i have since remained one of the 8% of recovering eating disordered women to not relapse and have been living my life more fully than ever before. i discovered so much about who i am as a woman and about life and people, that has been so rewarding and uncovered everything inside me that i had always longed to become.

i jumped back into my career with more life than ever before. easy, would not be a good word choice for the days since leaving reno. life always seems to be throwing a hurdle when least expected but i now have it inside me to cope and  my talent for looking at life and people for the better will always remain a part of who i am. i have learned to acknowledge the days and situations in life that are not happy still while being genuinely happy myself.

two weeks ago i was asked to bring in models all day on mondays and told that i wasn't going to be supervised, they just wanted to see my work on my own for the next six months. this past monday after i had completed my last model vic took me over to talk to me. it was only my second day on my own and she then gave me some of the most treasured compliments i have received concerning my talent and then told me that six months was much too long and that i was ready to be on the floor and be named a colorist in their salon.

reaching my dream of what i came out here to achieve has led me to reflect on the past 18 months and all they have brought me. it has been an adventure to say the least, some of the lowest lows and many many more of the highest highs. i have tasted the bitter and could not imagine the sweet ever getting more sweet. moments i questioned if i had made the right decision, if leaving my family in the middle of all the crumbling and just wondering if i could really do it in spite of my disorder and all the other human weaknesses, melted away in that moment when she told me that i had made it. that everything i had been working so hard for just became my reality. after tearful hugs in the salon, phone calls to family and going out with friends to celebrate @shakeshack, i came home and sobbed. just sobbed i was so overwhelmed with happiness.
i would not take back a single minute that has brought me to where i am today and i fear to express my thank you's and gratitude to everyone that has supported me, loved me, believed in me, and just been there for me because i worry that you will not be able to feel it as much as i do. from the bottom of my heart, thank you. i could never have done it without all of you and it has meant the world to me. i really am the happiest and luckiest girl alive.
crazy, naive, or living on pure faith... whatever people called it when i moved here on that warm august day. i am here. and i am so excited for all the many chances and surprises life has to offer me in the future. cheers to this being a whole new adventure and the beginning of many more happy moments to come and add to my anything but ordinary life!

all my love, aubrey
